Envirokonsult Equipment and Services, Inc. joined the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Public Works and Highways, Metro Manila Development Authority, Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission, Maynilad, and other volunteers from the local government units, private sector, non-governmental organizations, and academe in planting around 600 tree species on the shores of Baseco on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 in observance of the Philippine Arbor Day.
DENR Assistant Secretary Corazon Davis said the tree planting activity in Baseco is part of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project. “Kung titignan ho natin konektado [ang Baseco] sa Manila Bay kaya ‘ho dine-develop din natin yung Baseco…Our vision for this area in Manila Bay [is to be] an area where it is vibrant in terms of economy, in terms of livelihood for the people but equally important if there’s caring for the environment and making use of those environment and natural resources ng lalo ho nating mas mapaganda ang ating buhay.”
The DENR kicked off the Manila Bay Rehabilitation Project last January which aims to reduce the bay’s coliform to a level that is fit for swimming, skin diving, and other water activities.
Meanwhile, Envirokonsult’s Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator Ma. Victoria Dineros said the trees that people plant today will not only benefit the present but future generations as well. “Isang magandang opportunidad ito upang ating ipakita ang ating partisipasyon upang mapangalagaan ang ating kapaligiran. Ito ay hindi lamang sa pangkasalukuyan kundi para din sa hinaharap. Ang mga punong ating itinanim ay mapapakinabangan ng mga susunod na henerasyon. Ito rin ang pagpapakita natin kung paano natin pinangangalagaan ang nilikha ng ating Diyos.”
The Philippine Arbor Day is institutionalized under Proclamation No. 643 which states the need to declare a day each year to conduct tree planting and other related activities to promote a healthier ecosystem.
