Employees of Envirokonsult and Waterkonsult were made aware of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) in the Workplace and how this may be avoided through a seminar conducted by the QC Health Department on Tuesday, July 2, 2019.
The QC Health Department explained through a video presentation that STIs are predominantly passed through unprotected sexual contact with a person infected; but can also be transmitted through blood transfusion, mother to child during pregnancy and childbirth, and sharing a needle used by a person with STI.
There are four types of STIs including 1) Bacterial STI such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis; 2) Fungal STI such as candidiasis; 3) Parasitic STI such as pubic lice and scabies; 4) Viral STI such as herpes and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The QC Health Department identified five common signs and symptoms of STIs, namely:
- Painful urination
- Severe itching near the genital area
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Presence of yellowish discharge from the genitals
- Abdominal Pain
To avoid contracting STIs, Envirokonsult and Waterkonsult employees were told to remember the “ABCDE” in STI protection:
A – Abstinence from casual sex
B – Be faithful to a mutual partner
C – Correct and consistent use of condoms (when in doubt)
D – Do not use illegal drugs
E – Education and early detection
