Almost 400 students in Puypuy Elementary School in Bay, Laguna participated in the hygiene fair conducted by the AV Gedang Foundation, Inc. on Monday, September 24, 2018.
The dentists from the Philippine Academy of General Dentistry, Inc. (PAGD) led by Dr. Valery Virata gave a lecture about oral care and helped in fluoride application. Some alumni from the Batch ‘72 of Judge Juan Luna High School (JJLHS) also assisted in the event and provided snacks for the students.
“Napakahalagang matutunan ng mga bata ang tamang pangangalaga ng kanilang ngipin upang makaiwas sa madaling pagkasira at pagkakasakit, at magkaroon sila ng confidence sa kanilang sarili,” said Vicky Dineros, Corporate Social Responsibility Coordinator of AV Gedang Foundation.
According to the National Monitoring and Evaluation Dental Survey of the Department of Health (DOH) in 2011, 87% or more than 80 million Filipinos suffer from tooth decay while seven out of 10 have never been to a dentist.
Dr. Alice Villados of the PAGD earlier highlighted the importance of teaching good dental care at a young age so it will become part of the child’s habit as he/she grows old. She added that maintaining a balanced diet (i.e. eating food at right proportions) and reducing consumption of sugary foods can help children avoid tooth decay.
Meanwhile, volunteer employees from the Waterkonsult Equipment and Services, Inc. and Envirokonsult Equipment and Services, Inc. taught the students the proper way of washing the hands.
“Nagpapasalamat ako kay Sir Anthony Gedang at sa kaniyang foundation sa patuloy niyang pagtangkilik sa aming paaralan at patuloy na pagbibigay biyaya sa aming paaralan,” said Ma. Luz Lumitao, Principal of Puypuy Elementary School.
The foundation has been supporting the Puypuy Elementary School since 2014 by organizing health fairs and providing sports and school materials and facilities.
